Soul Mates and Navels

In true to form, complicated to summarize terms, there is an ancient comedy routine that deals with romantic, sexual love.  Aristophanes is the stand-up comic in a show put on by Plato where he talks about why men and women chase after each other (note he included homosexuality).  So in the world according to Aristophanes, the Greek Gods were intimidated by the growing strength of humans, which were these two-faced, four-legged, four-armed beings.  Their somewhat fearless leader, Zeus, in his infinite wisdom, came up with a solution that explained two very mysterious items in one brilliant stroke:

  • soul mates
  • belly buttons

So while Zeus mercilessly split whole beings to keep them in their place, rendering them flat as a fish on one side. His son Apollo ran around playing cosmetic surgeon leaving a trail of belly buttons in his wake.  In the words of Aristophanes, these butchered folks then spent the rest of their days seeking their severed halves and suffered eternal longing until they were reunited.

Talk about a match made in heaven!  Soul mates and belly buttons!  I think the Greeks threw some incredibly creative drinking parties…
